It is our pleasure to share the news of Vladimír Smutný’s success at the 55th Chicago International Film Festival.

The International Feature Film Competition jury, composed of Gabor Greiner, Tatiana Leite, Tetsuya Mariko, Cosmina Stratan and Jennifer Reeder awarded him the Award for Best Cinematography for The Painted Bird. The jurors discussed the film intensely in relation to its “portrayal of ghastly events that the young protagonist endures throughout the film, evoking a strong sense of sadness and helplessness without hope for resolution. However, the black and white photography and framing was so strong that it made it impossible to look away”.
